
United Way of the Plains is a local, volunteer-driven organization.
Established in 1922 as the Community Chest, United Way of the Plains brings the community together to address critical issues in Sedgwick, Butler, Sumner and surrounding counties of Cowley, Harper, Harvey, Kingman and Reno.

Coordination of social services
United Way is actively involved in coordinating various health and human services.
United Way also regularly conducts research to determine what the community’s greatest needs are and what services are available to address those needs.
Efficient fundraising
United Way raises funds each year to support programs at local nonprofits and to provide direct community services. Its fundraising is extremely efficient, with only 12 percent used for administrative costs.
Accountable fund distribution
Approximately 200 volunteers review local agency programs and community needs to direct funds where they will do the most good.
Helping people find help and give help
United Way operates a 2-1-1 call center that connects people to nonprofit and government human services with an easy-to-remember phone number for Kansas.
Supporting volunteerism
United Way Volunteer Center supports volunteerism in Sedgwick and surrounding counties by recruiting volunteers, coordinating group projects, organizing youth involvement, and providing agency training.
Gift-in-kind distribution
The United Way Give Items of Value (GIV) Program is a corporate gifts-in-kind program that saves charities money.
