Free Financial Resource Fair on Friday, Jan. 26

WICHITA, Kan., Jan. 25, 2024 – United Way of the Plains is celebrating National Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day with a free financial resource fair. The event takes place on Friday, Jan. 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Evergreen Community Center & Library (2601 N. Arkansas Ave.). Participants can learn about banking options, free tax preparation, utility assistance and other community resources.

IRS-certified volunteers will offer free tax preparation services at the event for those who qualify for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Households must earn less than $64,000 to qualify for the tax preparation program. Walk-ins are welcomed. Appointments for other dates can be made by calling United Way’s 211 Information and Referral Service.

Tax preparation sites in Kansas are located across Wichita and Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley, Ford, Geary, Marion and Pratt counties. A list of items that should be brought to tax preparation appointments can be found at unitedwayplains.org/taxprep. The 2024 tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15.

VITA FACTS

  • Last year, local IRS-certified VITA volunteers filed more than 5,700 returns, valued at $7 million that was returned to the local economy.
  • 200 IRS-certified and trained volunteers donate their time to the program every year.

This free tax preparation service is offered annually through a partnership between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and United Way of the Plains.
