Get to Know…Katie Eaton, Associate Director of Philanthropy
Describe your role at United Way.
As Associate Director of Philanthropy, it is my job to connect community members and local businesses interested in funding opportunities to support incredible programs focusing on health, education, financial stability, and basic needs within our community.
Share your career history and how you made your way to United Way.
My career started with odd jobs throughout high school and beyond. I tried everything from landscaping, being a runner for an attorney, working retail and in restaurants, even reading water meters for the city before I found my way to tourism, parks & recreation. I am drawn to community programming and resource management, and I thrive in an eclectic, fast paced environment. Throughout my ten years with Johnson County Park and Recreation I served as special event coordinator, Kansas City Corporate Challenge Games Director, Theatre in the Park Administration, assisted in the development and grand opening of the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center and the community programming, special events and fundraising that took place throughout these roles. As a Wichita native, I decided I was ready to return home. I was fortunate to land at Exploration Place assisting with development and special events, and after a short time there, I am thrilled to have found my place at United Way of the Plains.
What are your interests or pastimes?
I love being outdoors. Hiking, biking, swimming, camping, and yoga are my favorite pastimes.
Share a favorite book or movie and why.
This is a tough one, I can never pick a favorite, but the first to come to mind is Erin Brockovich. I love the tenacity, grit, and ultimately the community investment that comes to fruition within this true story.
If you would like, share a little bit about your family.
I am proud to be the single mom of an incredibly smart, funny, six-year-old boy, Gavin, who is playing his first year of soccer! We adopted a four-year-old husky-lab mix named Bolt a few months ago and he has quickly become part of the family. We are also lucky to have a large extended family, although spread out all over the country, we remain close knit and have lots of fun places to visit!
What is the number one reason you love working at United Way?
I love serving my community in meaningful ways. Having the opportunity to connect with people daily, highlighting United Way programs and being part of this high caliber team is a dream.
