Homelessness is a Housing Problem
What drives the prevalence of homelessness in any given city? Mental illness, drug use, poverty, weather and public assistance often come to mind. Author Gregg Colburn will join us to examine these conventional beliefs with a research-based approach. His book, “Homelessness is a Housing Problem,” offers a more convincing explanation: housing market conditions, such as the cost and availability of rental housing. As part of his remarks, Colburn will apply the findings from his book to the unique context of Wichita.
Everyone from community stakeholders to nonprofit executive directors is invited to attend the Impact ICT – Continuum of Care Annual Meeting to learn how we can use Gregg’s insights to strengthen our work to make homelessness rare, brief and nonrecurring.

Gregg Colburn is an associate professor of real estate at the University of Washington’s College of Built Environments. He publishes research on topics related to housing and homelessness and is co-author of the book “Homelessness is a Housing Problem: How Structural Factors Explain U.S. Patterns.” Gregg holds an MSW and PhD from the University of Minnesota and an MBA from Northwestern University. Prior to academia, he worked as an investment banker and private equity professional. Gregg is co-chair of the University of Washington’s Homelessness Research Initiative and is a member of the National Alliance to End Homelessness Research Council.
