Aaron Joel Smith Memorial Youth Volunteer Scholarship

Each year, United Way of the Plains’ Aaron Joel Smith Memorial Youth Volunteer Scholarship rewards three high school students who are active volunteers with United Way of the Plains or nonprofits affiliated with United Way. Scholarships are awarded in the amounts of $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000, and are used during the first year of college. Residents of Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley and Sumner County are eligible to apply.


Applications are due by 5 p.m., Monday, Jan. 3, 2022. Winners will be notified in the spring of 2022.



List your volunteer activities since your freshman year of high school. Include ongoing volunteer activities and short-term projects. Limit your list to projects associated with United Way of the Plains or nonprofit organizations affiliated with United Way. Be sure to highlight volunteer work done outside of school.


For each volunteer activity, include: Name of the organization, type of volunteer activity performed, date(s) volunteer activity was performed, total number of volunteer hours performed and the volunteer agency contact person's name, title and phone number.

How have you made a difference in your community by volunteering? How has volunteering impacted your life? Write a short essay, no longer than 550 words, that answers these questions. Provide specific examples, including the name of the organization and the type of volunteer work you performed.
