United Way of the Plains Awarded $2.2 Million Grant to Prevent Family Homelessness

WICHITA, Kan., Friday, Jan. 30, 2026 — United Way of the Plains announced today it has been awarded a $2.2 million grant from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC) to provide assistance and services to low-income families at risk of or experiencing homelessness. United Way will receive $1.1 million in funding each year for two years. The grant term is July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028, with two one-year options to renew.

This restricted grant funding will help United Way support eligible families with children who struggle to afford housing or are homeless by providing navigation services and financial assistance. Through United Way’s 211 Information and Referral Service, the expert guidance of housing navigators, and the collaboration of community partners, families facing crisis will receive personalized support, access financial assistance, and build a foundation for long-term stability.

In Sedgwick County, roughly 40% of working families are considered ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed), living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to afford basic necessities like housing. This grant will help address pressing needs for the community’s most vulnerable families and minimize their risk of experiencing homelessness.

“No family should have to choose between housing and putting food on the table,” said Matt Lowe, United Way of the Plains Director of Community Impact. “By prioritizing prevention and rapid rehousing, we’re helping families create the stability they need to build a stronger, more secure future for themselves and their children.”

While the need remains great, this family-focused grant is one vital element in making homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring for all individuals in Sedgwick County.

“This grant is an investment in our neighbors and the future of our community,” said Pete Najera, United Way of the Plains President and CEO. “When families have the support they need to remain housed and succeed, we all benefit. Together, we are creating a stronger, more resilient community.”
