United Way of the Plains Announces Retirement of President and CEO Pete Nájera

WICHITA, Kan., June 24, 2026 – The Board of Directors of United Way of the Plains today announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Pete Nájera will retire effective March 31, 2027, following a distinguished career in military, business and nonprofit leadership.

“Leading United Way of the Plains has been one of the greatest honors of my career,” said Nájera. “Over the past six years, I have had the privilege of working alongside extraordinary teammates, thoughtful community leaders, generous donors, committed partners and dedicated volunteers who share a belief that we can accomplish more when we work together. I am proud of the lives we have touched, the challenges we have helped address and the partnerships we have built to strengthen our region.”

Nájera joined United Way of the Plains in August 2020 following philanthropic leadership roles, including serving as president of the Rudd Foundation. His career spans military service, entrepreneurship, business leadership and philanthropy. Prior to joining United Way, he served 20 years in the United States Army, including assignments overseas and in senior leadership roles within the Pentagon and the Executive Office of the President as a White House Fellow, and helped grow a renewable energy startup into a successful international company.

Throughout his career, Nájera has championed a servant leadership philosophy rooted in collaboration, community engagement and the belief that lasting change occurs when people work together toward a common purpose.

During his tenure at United Way of the Plains, Nájera led the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic, celebrated its centennial anniversary, expanded programs and services across south-central Kansas, launched new community initiatives and secured the largest grant award in the organization’s 104-year history. Under his leadership, United Way increased its reach and strengthened partnerships focused on improving education, financial stability, health and basic needs across the region.

“Pete’s impact on United Way of the Plains and our community has been extraordinary,” said Doug Ledbetter, Chair of the United Way of the Plains Board of Directors. “His vision, integrity and commitment to our mission have strengthened this organization, expanded our impact and positioned United Way for continued success. Because of Pete’s leadership, United Way is financially strong, strategically focused and well-positioned for its next chapter. We are grateful for his service and his commitment to ensuring a smooth transition.”

While Nájera’s accomplishments are numerous, he credits the organization’s success to the people who have advanced its mission.

“I have a lot to be grateful for, but I’m most proud that I was able to help bring together talented, passionate people who are committed to the common good,” said Nájera. “The strength of United Way has never been one person. It is the collective effort of our staff, volunteers, donors, partners and community leaders working together to improve lives. I have every confidence that the organization will continue to thrive and create meaningful change for years to come.”

Nájera will remain in his role through March 31, 2027, providing the Board of Directors ample time to conduct a thoughtful succession process and ensure a seamless leadership transition. The Board will launch a comprehensive search to identify United Way’s next leader and will share additional details as they become available.
