United Way Announces Marty Baumbach as Vice President of Community Impact
WICHITA, Kan., Monday, Aug. 17, 2026 — United Way of the Plains is pleased to announce it has named Marty Baumbach as its new Vice President of Community Impact.
In this role, Baumbach will lead efforts to strengthen United Way’s impact across south-central Kansas through strategic initiatives, community investments, and nonprofit partnerships focused on health, youth opportunity, financial security, and community resilience. His work will address community challenges and create pathways to opportunity for our neighbors to reach their potential and thrive.
Baumbach brings extensive experience leading cross-sector initiatives and teams focused on improving outcomes and responding to community needs. Most recently, he served as Disaster Housing Director for FEMA, where he led one of the agency’s two national housing teams, directing large-scale emergency temporary housing for families affected by disasters and collaborating with local, state, and federal partners to deliver more than $400 million in individual assistance grants.
“Marty brings an exceptional combination of strategic leadership, operational expertise, and a deep commitment to serving others,” said Pete Najera, United Way of the Plains President and CEO. “What stood out to us is his ability to build and empower strong teams, navigate complex challenges, and turn shared vision into meaningful action.”
As deputy Chief Operating Officer for the U.S. military’s largest overseas health system, Baumbach coached and led a 275-member team and nine department heads, including facilities, human resources, information technology, and logistics. Under his leadership, they improved continuity of care and reduced barriers to access for underserved populations.
“I’m honored to step into this role at United Way of the Plains,” said Baumbach. “I’ve learned throughout my career that meaningful change starts with listening, understanding the challenge, learning from the people closest to it, and bringing the right partners together around a shared goal. I’m excited to bring that same collaborative approach to United Way, strengthening partnerships, investing in what works, and creating lasting impact for our neighbors.”
Baumbach is a board-certified healthcare management professional. He earned his bachelor’s degree in management and human relations from MidAmerica Nazarene University, and a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He is a veteran of both the U.S. Air Force and Navy.
