United Way Investing $4.1 Million in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan., April 13, 2026 – United Way of the Plains endeavors to build a region where everyone can thrive, and in that effort, is announcing an investment of $4.1 million to advance the work of 74 programs at 57 charitable organizations. When combined with the 16 direct services already provided by United Way of the Plains, the collective effort represents a productive nonprofit ecosystem fighting to meet the growing needs of our neighbors.

These competitive grants are distributed through Opportunity on the Plains, United Way’s largest annual investment program. They reflect a commitment to a strong, data-informed social safety net similar to other prosperous communities that responds to our most pressing needs while creating pathways to opportunity for all. By supporting programs that advance health, youth opportunity, and financial security, this funding will help individuals and families build stability and foster a stronger, more resilient region.

United Way of the Plains President and CEO, Pete Najera, shared that this investment reflects the strength and generosity of the local community. “Any United Way is only as strong as the community that supports it. We are grateful to the thousands of donors who invest in our work to lift their neighbors and advance solutions that improve conditions across our community.”

Nonprofit program applications for funding were reviewed by panels comprised of 112 community volunteers, ensuring that funding decisions were not only strategic but truly representative of local priorities. Final recommendations were considered and approved by the United Way Board of Directors. This year, volunteers reviewed more than $7.5 million in requests, demonstrating both the scale of community need and the importance of strategic philanthropic investment.

“Our organization is going to benefit from Opportunity on the Plains in tremendous ways,” said Marquetta Atkins-Woods, Executive Director of Destination Innovation. “This grant is serving high school kids, making sure that they have college readiness skills and mentorship.”

United Way of the Plains will open two additional funding opportunities this year for nonprofits. Promise on the Plains will launch later this month, strengthening grassroots organizations meeting the needs of underserved communities. In September, Impact on the Plains will champion the entrepreneurial spirit of the local nonprofit ecosystem by investing in bold solutions that address complex social issues.
