To support local childhood literacy efforts, Wichita State University Men’s Basketball is joining forces with Coaching for Literacy to host the #Fight4Literacy game on Saturday, Feb. 12. Your donation to #Fight4Literacy will help Shocker Nation provide books and supplies to kindergarten through third grade students and enhance United Way’s Read to Succeed tutoring program in our very own Shocker neighborhood.

The Shockers are the reigning #Fight4Literacy national champions. Donations are already underway at unitedwayplains.org/literacy where fans can track the team’s progress and help us defend our title.

Send checks, payable to United Way of the Plains with “Fight 4 Literacy” in the memo, to 245 N. Water St, Wichita, KS 67202.

Volunteers are ready to help file taxes for free

Your United Way’s free tax prep program helps those who make less than $60,000 file their taxes for free. IRS-certified volunteers do the work and help clients access important tax credits. Sites are available across Wichita and in Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley, Geary and Marion counties. Last year, volunteers filed 6,364 returns that generated over $7.6 million in refunds, helping individuals and families in our community find a more financially secure future. Appointments for drop-off or in-person services can be scheduled online or by dialing 2-1-1. You can also file for free online with the help of a volunteer tax preparer at GetYourRefund.org/BEST-UWP.
