Get to know…Annie Murach, Assistant to the President

Tell us about your role at United Way, and how it has evolved over the past 10 years.

I started off as an Administrative/Facilities Assistant, helping with building upkeep and front desk support. I could put my house and yard work skills to good use.  When the Assistant to the President position opened, I was fortunate enough to get the job and have enjoyed serving in this office in my support role.

Tell us something you’ve learned or accomplished over the past decade that you’re proud to share.

I had never worked in nonprofit, and it’s been fascinating to see it work.  The collaboration of different agencies, getting services out to those who need them is a great thing to watch and be a part of.  I’ve been able to form friendships and partnerships over time that have honestly made my job easier and having that support system readily available is priceless. Finally, teamwork is special here and if you aren’t used to working on an effective team or seeing a team in action you learn it very quickly here and for that I am grateful to be here.

The emergency management process, in times such as COVID, is amazing to see everyone get to work.  There was no panic, no grinding to a halt, everyone just did their best and went to work. This is our strength and it’s the entire staff who just amazes me, everyone just pitches in without question.  The Homeless Outreach team, 211 staff and GIV as special mention. All of the staff are amazing don’t get me wrong, I can say good things about every person here, but those specific groups are magic to watch when they are in the field.  Anyone would say they were a highlight to work around; they make everyone better in the office.

If you would like, share a little bit about your family or tell us something we might not know about you.

Anyone in the remote area of a TV with Nebraska football on knows I’m a huge fan.  I love animals and they apparently love me since many just walk up to me on any given day in my driveway.  I have rabbits, cats, two tortoises and most recently I became a member of the chicken distribution system and have one chicken.  I take care of my mom who is happily salty but a pleasure to be with.   I’ve lived in several different states and that has helped me form friendships quickly and realize the value of those relationships when you move into a new place you aren’t familiar with.

What do you like most about working at United Way of the Plains?

Even the hard days are temporary and again, I mention the teamwork is impressive.  When someone needs help, including myself, personally or at the office, it’s impressive how one is flooded with support from everyone.
