Get to know…James Childers, accountant
Tell us about your role at United Way.
I oversee and manage all incoming funds at United Way, ensuring financial accuracy and accountability. I’m also responsible for maintaining our fixed assets, posting entries to the general ledger, supporting the payout process, and overseeing our Positive Pay system. Along with these core responsibilities, I handle a wide range of critical processes that help keep our financial operations running smoothly.

Tell us more about your career and what led you to United Way.
I’ve been working in accounting for many years, with a wide range of experiences across different industries. Before joining United Way of the Plains (UWP), I worked as a third-party accountant for fast food franchises, managing the books for nearly 500 Pizza Hut locations along the East Coast. From there, I transitioned to a senior living facility and later worked with another third-party firm handling finances for a business that owned multiple Airbnb properties and similar ventures. While each role offered something unique, none have been as meaningful or rewarding as my time here at UWP.
Tell us something you’ve learned or accomplished over the past 3 years that you’re proud to share.
I’ve worked to optimize and streamline the workflow in the finance department. My time at UWP has let me reassess what is important to me and given me time to reassure that I am doing what makes me feel good and that I’m making a difference in my community the best that I can. My team has pushed me to grow and develop beyond what I thought I was capable of, and I am grateful that they continue to push me.

Tell us something we might not know about you.
In my early 20s, I worked at Hartman Arena, handling lighting and sound rigging for touring acts. I had the chance to support a wide range of performers, from Cody Simpson to The Wiggles, but the highlight was a co-headlining show with Megadeth and Rob Zombie.
As a longtime metal fan, getting to work backstage with bands I’d idolized was unforgettable. I was even asked to help move some of the large stage props during the show. Afterward, the tour manager invited me to join the crew for the next few stops. I jumped at the chance and spent the next week traveling through Oklahoma and Texas with the tour. Definitely an experience I’ll never forget.
If you would like, share a little bit about your family.
I have an eight-year-old son, and a loving wife who serves as a Lieutenant with Sedgwick County EMS. Most of my free time is spent with Liam either playing outside or battling it out with online video games.
