Which United Way Free Tax Service Fits My Needs?

Tax season can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to. United Way’s Free Tax Filing Services help income-limited households file their taxes for free and access tax credits they qualify for. Our tax services remove the challenges and financial burden of filing your taxes by offering quality, free filing assistance through a network of partners and IRS-certified volunteers. Last year, we filed over 6,500 tax returns that generated a record-breaking $8 million in refunds for our neighbors. We know the tax season is more than just getting a tax return; it’s about taking a step in your journey to financial security.

United Way’s Free Tax Filing Services offer three free, trusted options designed to meet you where you are, whether you prefer in‑person help, virtual support, or a do‑it‑yourself approach.

In-Person Tax Help (VITA)

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) provides free, in-person tax preparation by IRS-certified volunteers who prepare and e-file your return to help you claim valuable credits.

This option is best if you:

  • Had a total household income of $69,000 or less in 2025.
  • Are disabled.
  • Can stay on site while your taxes are prepared.

Appointments for the 2026 tax season are now open, with locations across Wichita and Sedgwick, Butler, Cowley, Geary, Marion, and Pratt counties.
