United Way Recruiting Volunteers for 2026 Free Tax Preparation Services
WICHITA, Kan., Dec. 1 – United Way of the Plains is now recruiting volunteers to serve as greeters, intake specialists, and tax preparers for the 2026 tax season to support its Free Tax Filing Services program, part of the nationwide Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) initiative. The program operates Feb. 1 through April 15 and provides free tax preparation to households earning $67,000 or less annually.
Funded by an annual grant from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the program is managed locally by United way of the Plains. Volunteers receive free training to become IRS-certified to file taxes and identify tax credits that help individuals and families improve their financial security.
Last year, volunteers prepared 6,700 returns, helping residents access a record-breaking $8 million in refunds, money that often supports essential needs like housing, food, medical care, and transportation.
“Volunteering with United Way of the Plains’ Free Tax Filing Service is a rewarding experience, one that truly impacts lives,” said Kristie Costa, United Way of the Plains VITA Program Manager. “It’s not just about numbers; it’s about helping families keep more of their hard-earned income. We know more households in our community can use this vital service and are looking for volunteers to help us grow the program.”
This volunteer opportunity is great for young professionals looking to build their careers, retirees wanting a temporary volunteer position, and anyone with a passion to help others. No prior experience is required. Training, certification, and on-site support are fully provided.
