Create Your Legacy: Planned Gift Options

Design your legacy through a planned gift that meets your unique goals.

A planned gift is a powerful way to make a lasting impact, both for the people you love and for the community you care about. As you consider the legacy you want to leave for your family, including United Way of the Plains in your plans helps ensure a stronger, more resilient community for generations to come. We offer several flexible ways to design a legacy that reflects your values. Explore options below of what you can give and how you can make your gift.

Donor-Advised Fund2025-10-14T13:27:48-05:00

Giving to United Way of the Plains through your donor-advised fund (DAF) is a powerful way to help support our community’s future. Recommending a grant from your DAF is a flexible, tax-efficient way to make an immediate impact.

To make a grant from your DAF, follow your fund administrator’s process for grant requests. Once the request has been made, please let us know by completing the “Let Us Know About Your Gift” form below or by emailing Kara Hunt, United Way of the Plains Associate Vice President of Philanthropy, at khunt@unitedwayplains.org or (316) 267‑1321, ext. 4213.

Benefits:

  • You can recommend a grant to United Way of the Plains when it’s convenient for you.
  • Since you already received a tax deduction when funding your DAF, you can support United Way of the Plains without impacting your current taxable income.
  • Your grant to United Way of the Plains can make an impact where you want it – general support, a specific program or an urgent need.

Don’t forget to let us know about your gift!

Bequest2025-08-20T11:55:25-05:00

A bequest is one of the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an attorney, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift to be made to United Way of the Plains as part of your estate plan. Charitable bequests can be left in many forms:

  • Designate United Way of the Plains as a full, partial or contingent beneficiary of your retirement account (IRA, 401k, 403b) or life insurance policy.
  • Name a specific dollar amount or asset to be left to United Way of the Plains.
  • Gift a percentage of your estate or make a gift from the balance or residue of your estate.

Benefits:

  • Receive an estate tax charitable deduction.
  • Reduce the burden of taxes on your family.
  • Leave a lasting legacy to our community.

Consult your legal or tax advisor to include language in your will or trust specifying United Way of the Plains as a beneficiary in your estate plan. Download sample language here. Don’t forget to let us know about your gift!

IRA Distributions2025-08-20T11:53:30-05:00

Save on taxes by making a charitable gift directly from your IRA. If you are age 70 ½ or older, you can meet your annual required minimum distribution from your traditional IRA while you fulfill your charitable goals. Qualified charitable distributions allow you to donate directly to United Way of the Plains from your IRA (up to $100,000 per year) and avoid paying income taxes on this distribution.

Benefits:

  • Avoid paying income taxes on your required minimum distribution.
  • Help United Way of the Plains continue our vital work.

Consult your IRA administrator to make a gift to United Way of the Plains. Don’t forget to let us know about your gift!

Charitable Remainder Trust2025-08-20T11:56:27-05:00

If you have built a sizable estate and also are looking for ways to receive reliable payments for you or your loved ones, consider a charitable remainder trust. This type of trust provides income each year for life or a period not exceeding 20 years from assets you give to the trust you create. At the end of the term, the balance in the trust goes to United Way of the Plains.

Benefits:

  • Receive steady income for yourself or named beneficiaries.
  • Reduce your income and estate taxes.
  • Support United Way’s mission to help our neighbors thrive after you’re gone.

Consult your legal or tax advisor who can help you fund the trust and set up the parameters of who will receive funds and for how long, as well as naming United Way of the Plains as a beneficiary. Don’t forget to let us know about your gift!
